About Subscribing

After I republish this website on the New Google Sites, I will rework this webpage. In the meantime, contact me to add you on my email list to receive notifications of new content on this site.

Tim, August 2021.

Obsolete, please come back in a few weeks.

IsbellOnline News offers free RSS and email feed subscriptions. I generally publish posts a few times each month. These span the range from Christian content to Personal Finance to Math Coaching among under-resourced students. Subscribing to my posts is very easy to do, and you can just as easily unsubscribe at any time. To subscribe, go to IsbellOnline News and follow the instructions near the top of the page. If you want to learn a little bit about this feeds, read on...

RSS feeds are more impersonal than email feeds, in that I (as the feed sender) do not know anything about my RSS subscribers. I can measure how many people come to my site in response to clicking on an link in an RSS feed, but that's all I know.

It's different when a person subscribes to my email feed. They give me their name and email address. So I have at least the option of getting back to them individually. And I can treat the email subscribers as something of an "inside group," offering them more access.

Here's a bit of a tutorial on feeds:

RSS feeds

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is quite simple, very slick, and saves you lots of time! Watch this 3 minute video for a really great overview.

To subscribe to an RSS feed of news from this site, just go to IsbellOnline News and click on the "Subscribe to posts" next to the orange chicklet. When you do, 1 of 2 things will happen:

1. If your browser (such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or whatever) already has a news reader installed, it will add "IsbellOnline News" to your existing subscriptions. Alternately, you can just copy the URL of the IsbellOnline News page into your news reader. Once you're a subscriber you won't need to come to my site to look for new content. Instead, it shows up in your news reader alongside your other subscriptions (such as CNN, New York Times, your favorite blogs, or whatever).

2. If an RSS reader is not already installed in your computer or browser, your computer will help you download an appropriate reader for your computer. I use Firefox, IE, and Chrome browsers... and I have a Google Reader installed in each one. I also use it on my Android smartphone. But Google Reader is shutting down on July 1, 2013 so I'll need to move to a different RSS reader. Most likely I'll go to Feedly, which I know works at least on Chrome, Firefox and Droid. I'll update this page when I finish my research. But there are many RSS feed readers out there. In the case of Chrome you will need to add a news reader extension from the Chrome Web Store. You can also get Feedly from the Chrome Web store.

Email feeds

If you prefer to receive feeds via email, just go to the IsbellOnline News page and click on the Email Feed Subscription Form. Then you'll receive an email version of the RSS feed a few hours after it publishes.

Do you have a website and want to set up email and RSS feeds?

Go to Sending Feeds from Your Site. It explains how to setup RSS and email feeds on your site, as well as how to connect your site to some social networking sites like Google+ and Facebook.

Don't have a site, but wish you did? Check out Website Design in the Christian Resource section of this site. It explains how to build a website like the one you are now on, which is built on the Google sites framework.

All the best, Tim
