2. My time
Coaching or collaborating with individuals or local churches through Zoom, phone, email, or in-person. Typical subjects: spiritual formation, practical theology, relationships, ordinary practice sharing of the Good News, career strategies, personal and church finance, and tax-smart donation strategies.
We don't accept any forms of compensation for ministry.
The short version: Robin and I married in 1967, raised two children, and now enjoy three grown grandchildren.
I am an active retired Nazarene minister with experience in integrated circuits and software development, business leadership, and personal finance. My focus in retirement is building culture by resourcing others through my website and giving time to people and projects. My specialty is spiritual formation and one-on-one discipleship, mostly among men.
I remain a husband, father, and grandfather. Over the years, I enjoyed playing many sports: baseball, basketball, football, racquetball, golf, and a little pickleball.
A longer version:
Robin and I grew up in northwestern Ohio, met in the ninth grade. Our first date was January 27, 1961. We married in 1967.
I received a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Akron (1969), and worked on an MSEE at Syracuse University before moving to California in 1971.
Robin received her degree in secondary education from the University of Toledo (1968) and a master's in molecular biology from San Jose State University several years later.
I worked in integrated circuit development for 2.5 years at General Electric (Syracuse, NY). For the next 15 years, I worked at National Semiconductor (Santa Clara, CA) in integrated circuit development and engineering management, traveling extensively in the United States, Europe, and the Pacific Rim. In 1986, I served as the Vice President of Operations during Cadence Design Systems' startup years. It's an electronic design automation software company.
I left high-tech in 1990 to prepare for pastoral ministry and do volunteer ministry at San Jose First Nazarene (now The Point) while attending Fuller Theological Seminary.
In 1992, I became the pastor of the Cupertino New Life Nazarene Church, a role I served in for 18 years. Robin became "Mother Superior" (just joking, but functionally accurate).
In addition to sponsoring a Laotian refugee family, we also provided support to other refugee and immigrant ministries from Cambodia, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Zambia, and elsewhere.
In May 2010, the Lord prompted us to retire. We remained parishioners at Cupertino New Life and around the Northern California Nazarene District. Our first project in retirement was to develop a Math Coaching program in San Jose for under-resourced middle and high school students.
In 2014, we moved to an HOA in Saratoga, CA, and volunteered to work in its committee structure (for the years leading the Architectural, Website, and Clubhouse committees). For us, this was a sort of Christian ministry to the neighborhood. We stepped aside at the end of 2025 to await an apartment in a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC).
And, I continue to develop this website and write a weekly Digest on the scriptures in the Revised Common Lectionary. And both of us remain fully active in volunteer ministry at New Life Church in Cupertino.
