The first Sunday of Advent is November 27 and many worship leaders or pastors will soon start searching for some new readings to use.  Follow this link to 4 completely different sets of Advent Readings to consider.  Each one has a reading for the 4 Sundays and a 5th reading designed for Christmas Eve (or Christmas morning, if you have a service then).  We used all of  these over various years at New Life Nazarene Church.  You are free to use them... or invite some writers in your church to write some original ones.

In case an Advent Reading tradition is a new concept in your church, you may wonder why a church might follow this sort of ritual.  There are several reasons to build an Advent candle lighting and readings into the worship services on the 4 Sundays leading up to Christmas:
  1. We live in the Kingdom and the Kingdom has a calendar and that calendar begins each year on the first Sunday of Advent.  If we want our people to “live” in the Kingdom it makes sense to acquaint them with the Kingdom’s calendar.
  2. It is a unique entry into the Christmas messages, and it which works in a very small or a very large church.
  3. It is familiar territory to any of our people who grew up in more formal traditions.
  4. Writing original readings for the Advent season offers creative writers in our congregations an outlet for their gift.
  5. Perhaps most important, it offers another place to involve people, as readers and candle-lighters in the worship.
