By Tim Isbell October 29, 2020 For many years, I anchored my weekly reading, reflection, and prayer to a set of (usually) four scriptures from the upcoming Sunday's Revised Common Lectionary. This framework ensures a balanced diet of Christian theology over every three-year cycle. In March 2020, I started using the scripture-set as the core of a Tuesday night online small group. To help participants dwell in these scriptures throughout the week, I began writing about half a page for each scripture. I call it a "digest" - because it's not a summary, devotional, or commentary. I write it to provide just enough background and guidance for people to fruitfully dwell and reflect on the passage. Here’s an example of what I mean by dwelling in the scripture. Early in the day, read one scripture and its digest. Then, reread the scripture and reflect on it for 5 minutes. At night, just before falling asleep, reread the scripture and ask the Spirit to speak to you through it overnight. Repeat this with each scripture through the week, looking for connections between the scriptures. That week’s Digest title and subtitles provide hints to the interconnections.
